Connecting a bank account

Updated 7 September 2026·4 min read

Connecting an account takes about a minute and happens on your bank's own site, not ours. Once it is done, transactions arrive on their own and keep arriving.

We cannot move your money
The connection is made through GoCardless as an account information service. It can read your balances and transactions, and it has no ability to make a payment at all. There is no instruction we could send that would move a penny, because the connection has no mechanism for one.

Connect the account

  1. 1
    Find your bank

Search for it by name. Anything supporting UK open banking is there, which is every high street bank and the challengers.

  2. 2
    Approve it at your bank

You are handed to your bank's own app or website to approve the connection. You sign in to them, never to us: your banking credentials never touch Financial IQ and we could not retrieve them if we wanted to.

  3. 3
Choose which accounts to bring in

Banks usually offer everything they hold for you, including savings and credit cards. Pick only the ones you want. On Personal each connected account beyond the first is £1.25 a month, so this step is worth reading rather than clicking through.

    Let the history load

Up to 24 months of transactions come across, depending on what your bank holds. It runs in the background, so you can carry on and come back to it.

Reconnecting every 90 days

Open banking rules cap how long one approval lasts at 90 days. That is the regulation rather than our choice, and it applies to every app that reads your bank data.

We start reminding you a fortnight before a connection lapses. Reconnecting is the same short trip to your bank and nothing already imported is lost.

If something looks wrong

No new transactions
Check the connection has not lapsed. Banks also publish transactions on their own schedule, so a payment made this morning may not appear until tomorrow.
An account is missing
You were probably not offered it, or it was left switched off at the choosing step. Reconnect and pick it then.
A transaction looks duplicated
A pending payment and the settled version of it can both appear briefly. They resolve to one entry once the bank settles it.
